What does a combined direct service +
macro/systems intern do?
A combined direct service + macro/systems
intern, spends one day a week providing direct
services to a small caseload of youth clients
and provides therapy and/or clinical case-
management services. There are also
opportunities to participate in the site’s service
referral team.
Interns spend 2 days a week focused on
macro/system level projects. Such projects
include assessment and evaluation of school-
based/linked initiatives (i.e. wellness centers,
peer-to-peer programing) that would include
secondary research, mapping
services/resources, key informant interviews,
focus groups, survey findings analysis and
reporting, cross-agency collaborations and
more. Additionally, there are opportunities to
contribute to facilitating workgroups and
learning communities, alongside county staff,
with the goal of enhancing coordination and
collaboration across public health, behavioral
health, and other county programming.
What support and training does a HSC intern
receive?
Weekly Clinical Supervision
Monthly Case Consultations (English and
Spanish)
Access to clinically focused trainings
Hands-on systems and capacity building
training
What are the internship requirements and preferences?
Macro/Systems + Clinical placement:
Enrolled in a social work or counseling program that
focuses on and requires clinical direct-service
experience AND systems-level projects, and/or on
a dual-master’s track (i.e. MSW + MPH)
Preferred experience:
Bilingual (Spanish), but not required
Some systems/macro-level experience - including
but not limited to: program assessment, evaluation,
multi-program collaboration, etc.
Strong writing and presentation skills
Strong interest and skills in collaborating with
various programs
Understanding of identity/positionality, and a
strong and active sense of cultural humility
What is the application and program timeline, and does
HSC offer a stipend?
Training program aligns with the public-school calendar.
Orientation is the first week of September and the
program runs through end of May the following year

Screening and interviews begin in February, with offers
made by mid-April
We offer a $5000/year stipend for those who are not
already receiving a placement related stipend (i.e.,
MHSA, CalSWEC, IBH). Bilingual candidates receive an
additional $500
