\[Instructions: This letter may be used to notify tenants about the Alameda County Smoke-Free Multi-
Unit Residences Law. The letter meets the requirements of the law. To send the letter to existing and
prospective tenants:
Insert the correct date at the top of the letter;
Check the box for whether you DO or DO NOT have a designated smoking area on your
property;
If you DO have a designated smoking area, describe where this area is located and then delete
the text in brackets, which says: \[describe where the designated smoking area is and delete
these instructions from the letter\];
Add your name to the bottom of the letter;
Delete these instructions;
Keep a copy of the letter for your records.\]
Notice for Existing and Incoming Tenants

Dear Tenant,
I am writing to inform you that Alameda County passed a law to prohibit smoking in multi-unit housing
in the unincorporated areas of the county. (Alameda County Code of Ordinances, Chapter 6.74.)
According to the law:
1. Beginning July 1, 2022, smoking is prohibited in all units, including any associated exclusive-use
enclosed area or unenclosed area, such as a private balcony, porch, deck, or patio.
2. Beginning July 1, 2022, smoking is prohibited in all common areas. Common areas include hallways,
pathways, lobbies, stairwells, mail areas/rooms, community rooms, playgrounds, pools, laundry rooms,
and parking lots.
Smoking includes cigarette smoking, marijuana smoking, and vaping of e-cigarettes \[choose one\].
